Grapetoids
Did you know that new world
wines (e.g. United States or Australia) name their wines for the
grapes from which they are made, while old world wines (e.g.,
France and Italy) wines are designated by their geographical
location of origin.
- What comes to mind when you hear
the word Chablis? We hope it's not jugs of grocery store
white! In reality, Chablis is a town located in Burgundy, France
which produces some of the greatest white wines in the world.
Made from 100 percent chardonnay, these wines are complex and
immensely satisfying. Shame on those who have sullied the name
of this regal wine!
- The three traditional champagne
grapes are: chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier. Champagne
can be a combination of any one or all of these. Blanc de blanc
designates champagne made with 100 percent chardonnay. Rose
champagne usually contains a higher percentage of pinot noir.
Contact with grape skins during fermentation gives it a
beautiful pale salmon color.
- Only sparkling wine made in the
Champagne region of France can truly be called champagne.
Sparkling wine from any other location in the world is simply
that - sparkling wine. There are many great producers of
sparkling wine, but champagne is king!
